Waiting Period 4 Years, 5 Months ago

Is it true that there is a five month waiting period to receive disability benefits once I am approved? How does this work?

The five month waiting period is calculated from the actual date that Social Security determines that you became disabled. For example, if you became disabled on January 1, 2004, your SSDI benefits would not begin until June 1, 2004. Social Security implemented the five month waiting period assuming that a claimant has other available avenues to receive temporary support, such as temporary state disability benefits, temporary disability benefits through their employer, or additional disability insurance policies that were purchased. This is often not the case, which is truly unfortunate for those of you who have no source of income during this five month waiting period.

Will you get paid the back benefits for the five months once you finally receive money?

Josh, I am afraid not. The five month waiting period actually means that you will not receive benefits for that period of time.
