Why does Social Security require a five month waiting period for me to receive my benefits?

Social Security implemented the five month waiting period assuming that a claimant has other available avenues to receive temporary support, such as temporary state disability benefits, temporary disability benefits through their employer, or additional disability insurance policies that were purchased. This is often not the case, which is truly unfortunate for those of you who have no source of income during this five month waiting period.
