You can file for Social Security disability benefits the very same day that you become disabled. Many people make the mistake of waiting months and even years after becoming disabled before filing. If a person is suffering from an illness or injury that is not expected to last one year, then the claim will be denied. However, if a person is suffering from a serious illness or injury and expects to be out of work for a year or more, they should file a claim promptly.
