Not really. There never were that many people getting Social Security disability benefits because of alcoholism or drug addiction. However, Congress has now prohibited Social Security from paying disability benefits on the basis of alcoholism or drug addiction. On the other hand, if someone who is an alcoholic or a drug addict should have a heart attack, come down with cancer or get severely sick or injured in other ways just like everyone else, then they would be eligible for Social Security disability benefits.
