Can an Alcoholic or Drug Addicted Person Win Disability Benefits?

by Lisa on March 4, 2011

Technically, Congress has put into place a rule that prohibits Social Security from paying disability benefits on the basis of alcoholism or drug addiction alone.  However, if a person has other existing physical or mental impairments that are severe in nature, and which can be documented by medical evidence, they can possibly win their disability claim even if alcoholism or drug addiction exists.   It may not be easy to win a claim in this situation.  It would be very helpful if a longstanding treating physician were to provide a report to Social Security opining that if alcoholism or drug addiction were not present, this person would still be disabled.
